Investigators said a serial robber will spend the next 54 years in prison for robbing several area motels. Shawn Smith, 27, was found guilty on several charges earlier this month. Smith robbed a hotel guest at gunpoint outside the Holiday Inn Express in Centerville and then held up two other hotels near the Dayton Mall last year. Police arrested Smith after a stakeout at his home in Dayton in June. Fingerprint evidence and witness identification led to Smiths conviction on seven charges, including aggravated robbery, felonious assault and robbery. However, Smith continues to maintain his innocence. Smith is hoping to get a new trial. Smith was found guilty on three counts of aggravated robbery, one count each of robbery, felonious assault and receiving stolen property....

"I've been down and I know what it's like," says Susan Gravier, the new executive director of Willits Community Services and Food Bank. "People were there to help me on the way. I just hope I can give back." With a background that includes directing operations for a drug rehabilitation center, managing a staff up to 50 people, business accounting, and social science, Gravier is as able as she is willing to run a much needed social service agency. In addition to professional skills, Gravier, born in Willits and raised in Covelo, has another advantage in being able to do an effective job: her innate compassion. "Everyone has potential," Gravier says. "Just a couple of kind words and understanding can help people move forward in their lives. I've always been drawn to folks less fortunate or who had hard times....

Attorney General: Gay couples married in Massachusetts may file joint tax returns in Washington D.C., but city's tax and revenue office may reject them: "The unexpected move by Attorney General Robert J. Spagnoletti places new pressure on Mayor Anthony A. Williams (D) to decide whether gay unions will be recognized in the nation's capital, potentially injecting it into the battle over gay marriage that roiled the 2004 presidential election and prompted an unsuccessful push in Congress for a constitutional amendment banning the practice." It's a phenomenon that resembles the heterosexual male interest in lesbian porn, yet the Village Voice reports that rabid interest in yaoi comics by underage females may contribute to the downfall of the genre as awareness grows that many of the young men pictured in the sometimes explicit boy-on-boy drawings appear underage....

ENCINITAS -- State Coastal Commission staff members are recommending that the panel deny an Encinitas proposal to ban short-term vacation rentals, but city officials said Monday they will ask for more time to negotiate when the commission meets today. In a written report, planners from the agency's San Diego office said prohibiting rentals of 30 days or fewer "would significantly restrict lodging opportunities for coastal visitors" along the city's shoreline. The Coastal Commission has final authority over the proposed ban because it would amend the city's zoning laws. ....

Compare apples to apples, please

I, and others, read the 11/2/06 DDT article by Logan Mosby, pertaining to discussion about a proposed Holt Collier Center that does not physically exist anywhere today. Her failing theme is faultily structured on her unwitting comparisons with the current hot Delta issue centered around Cleveland's active bid to relocate the physically existing Greenville Federal Building to Cleveland. Her concluding sentence is, “This is simple folks: Right is Right." Wrong. She further errs in her Alice-in-Wonderland headline: “Hey Washington County, don't call the kettle black."A rose is a rose. Yes. An apple is an apple. An orange is an orange. Ms. Mosby simply is not comparing apples with apples. Ms. Mosby is telling us that an apple is an orange. Simply said.It does Delta readers no justice and no good to see her build such a rotten (one rotten apple in a barrel makes all other apples stink) case scenario for all the wrong reasons....

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? While Oregon readied for another storm, officials searched for a woman missing along the sodden coast and presumed swept out to sea. Authorities said Elma Benefiel, 78, of Beaverton, and her daughter-in-law, Jan Benefiel, 61, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, went missing Tuesday afternoon from a Lincoln County beach. The body of Elma Benefiel was recovered Wednesday morning on a spit extending north from Gleneden Beach, where the two were last seen, authorities said. Benefiel is still missing. "I cautioned them to not go out on the beach because of the high water," said Lt. Vicky Ryan of the Depoe Bay Fire District. But, she said, the women apparently moved to another part of the beach for a walk. The warm-weather storm that moved across the Pacific Northwest and dumped as much as 15 inches of rain on Oregon had diminished Wednesday....
